A person rubbing a sore bunion
Bunion Management £110
A bunion is a painful red swelling at the base of the big toe and can cause an extreme amount of pain when walking. It's a deformity of the metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) and can only be corrected by surgery. What makes it even worse is that this is accompanied by a long and often painful recovery period. For those of us without a Netflix deal or mansion in Beverly Hills, surgery and time off just isn't a viable option.

That doesn't mean you have to live in pain, however. We can assess if it really is a bunion before addressing the factors that can make you far more prone to bunions, or exacerbate an existing one. Learn more here

Bunions are one of the most misunderstood podiatric conditions we come across. The two most common misconceptions are:

* That the problem actually is a bunion. It can be gout, arthritis or a fracture

* That it can be 'fixed' with splints or an off-the-shelf product

The painful fact is bunion correction requires surgery, and can take months to recuperate. For most of us, taking time off our feet is a dream as it is; being in pain for the duration makes it something you really need to consider. Our head podiatrist has written an excellent primer on bunions that explains the subject in more detail here.

Once we identify if the pain or swelling on your foot as a bunion or not, we can discuss how to manage not only the practicalities of getting into your shoes, but how to address your condition to prevent it worsening. You can live with bunions if you know how.
