Ingrown toenails are painful and if untreated can often lead to infection. The most common cause is by over-eager cutting of the nail, leaving a jagged spike in the corner that starts cutting into the unprotected skin. They can also be caused by injury or in some cases they may even be hereditary. Ingrown nails should never be treated at home, and should be managed to treat not only the nail itself but the cause of the issue to help prevent it re-occurring. Most ingrown toenails can be safely managed in-clinic and through following your Podiatrist's instructions.
